When to get my new puppy vaccinated

There is nothing more exciting than bringing home a new puppy.  One of the first questions many new puppy buyers have is when does my puppy need to be vaccinated.

Your puppy should be vaccinated at least four times, first around 6 weeks old, 9 weeks, 12 weeks and then again at around 16 weeks of age.   Additionally, your puppy will need a booster shot at one year of age.

These sets of shots can prevent your puppy from becoming infectected with Parvovirus, more commonly known as Parvo, Distemper and Hepatitis.  Sadly, many puppies die each year or suffer unnecessarily because they are not properly vaccinated against these killers.

Please remember that your pup is not fully protected by its shots until 10 days after its last set of vaccinations.

During your puppies first visit with your veternarian ask him to discuss his preferred vaccination schedule.

Rabie shots are typically given when a puppy is around 12 weeks of age or a little older depending on your states laws.   Here in Virgina the first rabie shot is given when the puppies reaches 4 months old, this shot is good for one year.   Once your dog has been given his second rabie shot, another shot will not be required for 3 years.
